Kashmir Valley Railway Stations, including Srinagar, have become a part of one the largest integrated public Wi-Fi network. They have been integrated with Indian Railways 6021 Station Wi-Fi Network, informed the Railways Ministry on July 18, 2021.
The Wi-Fi Network is a public Wi-Fi, which is provided under the brand
name of RailWire. It will now be available at 15 Railway stations
in Kashmir Valley, spread across four district headquarters of Jammu and
Kashmir Union Territory-Srinagar, Budgaon, Banihal & Qazigund.
What about the other
stations in J&K?
Public wi-fi had
already been made available at 15 stations in Jammu including-Jammu Tawi,
Kathua, Budhi, Chhan Arorian, Ghagwal, Vijaypur, Hira Nagar, Samba, Bajalta,
Bari Brahman, Ram Nagar, Sangar and Manwal.
It is a crucial step for Digital India mission
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that,it is a
crucial step for Digital India mission and will go a long way in connecting the
unconnected. The Minister continued by saying “Wi-Fi plays a significant role
in connecting the people, and is bridging the digital divide between rural and
urban India at a rapid pace."
The former
Railways' minister stated that the Indian Railways, in association with its
RailTel Corporation of India Ltd, is playing a significant role in bringing
high-speed Wi-Fi to every corner of the country.
The Ministry of Railways had given the responsibility to RailTel
Corporation of India Ltd to provide public Wi-Fi at all Railway stations to
bridge the stark digital divide between urban and rural India. The main vision
is to convert the Railway platforms to platforms for digital inclusion in line
with the central government's digital India mission.
The RailWire public Wi-Fi network is today spread across over 6000 Railway
stations across the country. This is one of the largest integrated wi-fi
networks in the world.
It is helping
connect the unconnected as over 5000 stations integrated with this public Wi-Fi
network are located in rural India with poor connectivity.
