Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) was established in 1972 by the
Consumer Product Safety Act. The main purpose behind this commission was to protect the public against the unreasonable risks of death and injuries, which are associated with consumer-related products. CPSC has jurisdiction over thousands of products such as toys,coffee makers, lawnmowers etc.

Let us see the duties of CPSC in order to reduce the risks of deaths and injuries from the consumer products: -

Development of voluntary standards which are industry-specific.

· Enforcement and Issuance of mandatory standards in the form of banning those

·       products which do not comply with the standards of public health;

·       CPSC is empowered to recall the products and make necessary arrangements for their replacement, repair or refund;

·       Carrying on research on the products which can be potentially hazardous in nature;

·       Educating and informing the consumers by creating awareness through media, local and state governments, private organizations; &

·       Responding to consumer inquiries.
